세계평화를 위해 예술활동 전개한 Gloria Keh(싱가포르)

자신의 예술을 사용하여 비영리 자선 봉사 프로그램인 CIRCLES OF LOVE 설립‘

‘환경을 보호하고 돌보는 것은 다음 세대를 위해 우리의 어머니 지구를 구하는 데 도움’

국제 아티스트 4인전 및 한국 & 싱가포르 국제전시회가 5월 20일(금)(세계인의 날) 오후 2시부터 29일(일)까지 경기도 광주신문사의 주최로 경기도 광주시 남종면 태허정로 456<포토 앤 갤러리>에서 개최되었다.

이번 국제 아티스트 4인전에는 싱가포르의 세계적인 작가 Gloria Keh의 작품 12점, 포르투갈 Paulo Duarte Filipe(포르투갈과 영국 활동)의 원작과 설치미술 12점과 <세계 지도선장의 원작자>인 유충열 작가의 그림 12점, 그리고 김유림 작가(광주신문 기자)의 그림 12점 등 48점의 작품을 국내 대중들에게 선보였다.

또, 지난 2021년 8월 코로나 19 상황에서 싱가포르에서 온라인으로 개최되었던 <한국과 싱가포르 두 나라간 평화를 위한 국제전시>에 참여한 작가 63명의 작품들이 MDF 아크릴 액자로 제작되어 전시되었다.

특별히 이번 국제 미술 전시회 "별이 빛날 때 선장은 웃는다"는 행사는 유충열, 글로리아 푸케, 김유림 등이 참여해 포르투갈 작가이자 영화감독인 파울로 두아르테 필리페의 독창적인 아이디어로 기획됐다.

Paulo는 런던에 거주하며 이번 개막행사와 영화 촬영을 위해 경기도 광주에 왔습니다.

따라서 광주신문은 한국인들에게 이들을 보다 더 알리기 위해 Paulo Duarte Filipe에 이어 Gloria Keh와 관련된 다양한 활동에 대해 더 많이 알기로 결정했다.<편집자 주>

 

□ Gloria Keh는 누구인가?

"제가 기억하는 한 예술은 제 삶의 중요한 부분이었습니다"고 싱가포르의 예술가인 Gloria Keh(70세)는 말했다.

“저는 가난한 가정에서 태어났고 우리는 기본적인 것만 가지고 있었지만 돌아가신 아버지 Martin Fu가 오일 화가였기 때문에 우리 벽에는 항상 그림이 있었습니다.

그리고 캔버스를 살 여유가 없어서 값싼 나무 판자에 그림을 그렸습니다”

“저의 아버지는 제 첫 미술 선생님이셨고 어린 시절 테레빈유 냄새를 안고 자라면서 저는 그의 견습생처럼 섬겼습니다. 저는 그의 붓을 닦고 그의 초상화를 위해 앉아 있고 몇 시간 동안 그가 그림을 그리는 것을 지켜보았습니다.

감수성이 풍부한 이 시대부터 나는 예술의 실천이 예술가에게 평화를 주는 것을 목격했습니다. 아버지는 사치품이 거의 없었지만 항상 자신과 평화를 유지했습니다. 나는 예술이 그에게 지금처럼 일상적인 재정 문제에서 멋진 탈출구를 제공했으며, 내 성격이 탁월해지기 위해 필요한 도전과 내 영혼이 번성하는 데 필요한 고독을 제공했다고 믿습니다.”

 

□ 자선 봉사 프로그램인 CIRCLES OF LOVE 설립

2008년에 Gloria는 인류에 대한 봉사에 자신의 예술을 사용하여 비영리 자선 봉사 프로그램인 CIRCLES OF LOVE를 설립했습니다. 그 해부터 그녀의 작품 판매로 인한 모든 돈은 일반적으로 구매자가 선택하는 자선 단체에 기부됩니다.

□ 성인 직장 생활 대부분 화가가 아닌 기자로 일해

성인 직장 생활의 대부분을 글로리아는 화가가 아닌 기자로 일했습니다. 그러나 42세의 나이에 다시 예술계로 복귀하여 호주 멜버른에서 10년 넘게 만다라 예술과 상징주의를 공부했습니다.

“사람들이 제게 예술을 해서 얻은 보상에 대해 물어왔어요. 내 보상은 실제 예술 과정에서 나옵니다. 예술을 만드는 것이 내 영혼의 목적을 성취하는 것이기 때문에 창조의 매우 흡인력 있는 연습은 나의 보상입니다.”라고 Gloria가 설명했습니다.

□ 세계평화를 위한 예술활동 전개

그리고 이 목적은 다양한 이유로 예술을 만드는 것을 수반합니다. 예를 들어, 세계 평화와 개인 내적 평화 모두에 대한 평화입니다. 또한 어머니 지구를 위해 - 지구를 구하는 데 도움이 되기를 바라는 환경을 위해, "예술가로서 우리는 예술의 선물에 감사해야 합니다."라고 Gloria가 말했습니다. 그리고 이 예술 작품을 만드는 선물은 잘 사용하고 공유하고 더 높은 목적을 위해 바쳐야 합니다.”

이것이 몇 년 전 글로리아가 평화를 위한 다양한 온라인 전시회를 조직하기 시작한 이유입니다. 이 모든 것은 Aqua Peace(바다와 해양 생물을 구하는 데 전념)로 시작하여 Cosmic Peace로 진행되었으며 우주/우주의 평화에 대한 인식을 제고했습니다. 그리고 마침내 2021년 8월에 평화를 위한 두 나라가 출범했습니다.

후자는 매년 8월이 되는 양국의 국경일을 기념하기 위해 사이버 공간을 가로질러 손을 잡은 대한민국과 싱가포르의 예술가들이 등장했습니다. 이 프로젝트는 한국의 프리미어 아티스트 유충열과 협업했습니다.

□ 4인 그룹 전시회 참가 계기

올해 ‘평화를 위한 두 나라간 국제전시’ 는 한상준 씨의 친절한 예의와 관대함으로 인해 오프라인 행사가 되었습니다. 전시는 5월 20일 한국의 Mr Han's 새 갤러리에서 개막되었습니다.

동시에 한씨의 새 갤러리에서 4인 그룹 전시회도 주최했습니다. '별이 빛날 때(When The Stars Shine)' 행사에서는 해외 작가 4인의 작품을 선보였습니다. 한국 김유림 씨와 유충열 씨, Paulo Duarte Filipe 씨(포르투갈/영국)와 Gloria Keh 씨(싱가포르)입니다.

네 명의 예술가는 각각 Paulo Duarte Filipe의 6개 설치를 포함하여 12개의 독창적인 작품을 선보였습니다.

□ 100개 이상 전시회에 참가, 18개의 국제 미술상 수상

"이 그룹 전시를 위해 특별히 그린 나의 새로운 환경 시리즈의 12 작품을 전시하는 것은 저에게 특권이었습니다."라고 국제 전시 현장에 새로 온 사람이 아닌 Gloria가 말했습니다. 그녀는 100개 이상의 미술 전시회에 참가했으며 18개의 국제 미술상을 수상했습니다.

“환경은 항상 존재하지만 슬프게도 많은 사람들이 그것을 당연하게 여깁니다. 그들은 좋은 환경을 유지하는 것이 얼마나 중요한지 깨닫지 못합니다. 환경을 보호하고 돌보는 것은 다음 세대를 위해 우리의 어머니 지구를 구하는 데 도움이 됩니다.”라고 Gloria가 말했습니다.

“따라서 예술 작품뿐만 아니라 우리 환경의 평화와 마음챙김을 위한 메시지와 간청을 전시할 수 있는 이 놀라운 기회는 저에게 정말 놀라운 축복이다. 내 예술이 더 큰 선을 위해 사용될 수 있고 그렇게 함으로써 내 영혼의 목적을 성취할 수 있기를."

글로리아는 “이 모든 것을 염두에 두고 마음은 감사로 가득 찰 수 밖에 없습니다”고 결론지었다.

“For as long as I can remember, art has been a major part of my life,” said Gloria Keh, 70, an artist from Singapore.

“I came from a poor family and we had only the basics but there were always paintings on our walls as my late father, Martin Fu, was an oil painter.

And he painted on inexpensive wooden boards as he could not afford canvases.”

“My father was my first art teacher and as a child, growing up with the smell of turpentine, I served like his apprentice: I cleaned his brushes, sat for his portraits and watched him paint for hours on end.

From this impressionable age, I witnessed how the practice of art rewarded the artist with peace. My father had little in terms of luxuries but he was always at peace with himself. I believe art then gave him a wonderful escape from his everyday financial problems, as it does now, for me, providing me with the challenges my personality needs to excel and the solitude my soul needs to thrive.”

In 2008, Gloria founded a non profit charity outreach program CIRCLES OF LOVE, using her art in the service to humanity. From that year, all monies from the sales of her artworks are donated to charities, usually of the buyer’s choice.

Said Gloria: “Art has taught me that I have enough and although I respect that many artists need to sell their art to survive and make a living; this is not my scene.”

For most of her adult working life, Gloria worked as a journalist, not as a painter. But at age 42, she returned full time to art, and studied mandala art and symbolism for over 10 years in Melbourne, Australia.

“People have asked me about my rewards from making art. My reward comes from the actual art process. The very absorbing practice of creation is my reward as making art is fulfilling my soul’s purpose,” explained Gloria.

And this purpose entails making art for various reasons. For example for peace, both world peace and for personal inner peace. As well as for Mother Earth - for the environment with the hope to help save the planet.

“As artists,” said Gloria, “ we should be grateful for the gift of art. And this art making gift must be put into good use, shared and dedicated for higher purposes.”

This is why a few years ago Gloria began to organize various online exhibitions for peace. It all started with Aqua Peace (dedicated to saving our oceans amd marine life), went on to Cosmic Peace and creating the awareness for peace in the cosmos/universe; and finally in August 2021, with the launching of Two Countries for Peace.

The latter featured artists from the Republic of South Korea and Singapore, who joined hands across cyberspace to commemorate the two countries’ national days that fall each year in the month of August. The project was in collaboration with premier artist Yoo Choong Yeul from South Korea.

This year, Two Countries For Peace became an offline event, by the kind courtesy and generosity of Mr Han Sang Jun. The exhibition was inaugurated on May 20th at Mr Han’s new gallery in South Korea.

Simultaneously, a four member group exhibition was also hosted by Mr Han at his new gallery. The event ‘When The Stars Shine’ showcased the works of four international artists; namely Ms Yoo Lim Kim and Mr Yoo Choong Yeul from South Korea, Mr Paulo Duarte Filipe (Portugal/UK) and Gloria Keh (Singapore).

Each of the four artists presented 12 original artworks including 6 installations by Paulo Duarte Filipe.

“It was a privilege for me to showcase 12 artworks from my new Environmental Series that were specially painted for this group exhibition”, said Gloria, who is no newcomer to the international exhibition scene. She has participated in over 100 art exhibitions and has won 18 international art awards.

“The environment is ever present but sadly many take it for granted. They fail to realise how important it is to maintain a good environment. To protect and care for the environment and in doing so help to save our Mother Earth, for the generations to come,” affirmed Gloria.

“Hence, this amazing opportunity to be able to exhibit not just artworks but messages and pleas for peace and mindfulness of our environment, is truly a wonderful blessing for me. That my art can be used for the Greater Good and in doing so, fulfill my soul’s purpose.”

“With all this in mind, one’s heart can only be filled with gratitude,” concluded Gloria.
